William Robinson, a free man of color, presents to the court and the police jury that he has recently purchased a twenty-six-year-old female slave named Caroline from Richard Clague, under the express condition that he would set her free. He further represents that Caroline has been his wife for many years, but he has not been able to "contract a legitimate marriage with her" because of her "state of slavery." He vouches that Caroline is "free from any of the crimes and blemishes contemplated by Law in cases of intended emancipation." He asks the court and the police jury to authorize him to grant his wife freedom and to allow her to remain in the state of Louisiana [Docket in French].
