Mrs. Morange, a widow, presents to the police jury that, in 1829, she received 150 "piastres" from a certain José Alvarez in return for a promise to emancipate his illegitimate ["naturelle"] daughter, named Josephine, by one of her slaves, a woman named Henriette. She explains that, in order to live up to her promise, she had Josephine baptized free in 1832. She now asks the police jury to authorize her to free Josephine after all the formalities required by law ["les formalités voulues par la loi."] have been fulfilled [Original in French].
