Joseph St. Amand, a free man of color, presents to the court and the police jury that he is the owner of his "natural," i.e. illegitimate, child, who is a woman of forty years of age "and upwards," named Mariane. He explains to the court that, "being now very aged," he is desirous to grant freedom to Mariane. He declares that Mariane has always "been honest & sober and industrious," is "free from all the crimes and blemishes contemplated by Law in cases of intended manumition," and is "respectful obedient and submissive to white persons." Joseph St. Amand therefore asks the court and the jury to authorize him to give freedom to his daughter and to order the sheriff to make "the publications required by law in such cases."
Result: Granted.
