Abstract
Edouard Coco, a free man of color, presents to the court and the police jury that, in 1835, he purchased his thirty-six-year-old wife named Rachel from Magdelaine Fletcher and Julie Aglae Winter, with the express intention of "procuring unto her a participation in the blessings of freedom" that he himself enjoys and that has been granted to him only a short time ago. He asks the court and the jury to authorize him to emancipate Rachel and to authorize the sheriff to make the publications "required by law."
