- West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. February 6, 1837. - February 5, 1838.
- Court: District
- Salutation: To the Honorable the Judge of the Third District Court of the State of Louisiana, holding Sessions in and for the Parish of West Feliciana
Abstract
Frank Irwin, a free man of color, claims that he was born in Pennsylvania and became a free man at the age of twenty-one. Irwin contends that, after becoming free, he lived for several years in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was “seized & delivered as a slave” to a man named Harris or Harrison, who took him to Kentucky. He eventually ended up in Louisiana, where he is now being held as a slave for life by Thomas Powell. Powell has offered to sell him for $1,500. Frank Irwin therefore prays to be taken away from Powell, sequestered in the hands of the sheriff, and decreed free. He seeks $1,000 from Powell, as compensation for his illegal detention.
Result: Granted.
