Petition #20883736

Abstract

John Hartwell, formerly of the city of New Orleans and now a resident of Mobile, presents to the court that in 1836 he purchased two slaves, thirty-three-year-old William and forty-two-year-old Sylva, under the condition that he would "enfranchise" them. He further presents that the two slaves were sold to him for $330, a sum "considerably" lower than their real value, because both had "rendered services so important" to their former master that he "was induced by gratitude" to execute the act that would lead to their freedom. John Hartwell therefore asks the court to direct the sheriff to post the notices of his intention to emancipate the two slaves in "the French & English languages."
