Abstract
Joseph Bernard represents that, on the 23rd of March, one of his slaves, a man named Peter, was "wantonly maliciously & unjustifiably" shot by a slave belonging to Lewis Pyburn. Peter died the next day. Bernard charges that Pyburn was present at the shooting, "aiding abetting & commanding" his slave. Bernard seeks compensation for the value of his slave, which he estimates at $1,500, and asks for an additional $1,000 in damages to cover his loss and the "necessary expenses" incurred "to compel" Pyburn "to do him justice."
