Petition #20883744

Abstract

Blaise Jean Baptiste, a free man of color, presents to the court and the police jury that he has recently purchased his wife named Julie, who is "upwards" of fifty years of age, from Mrs. Livaudais Beaumont, under the express condition that he would grant her freedom. He further presents that Julie has always "led" an honest life and is free from the "crimes and blemishes contemplated by law" in cases of emancipation. He also declares that she is "sober honest industrious and submissive in her conduct towards white persons;" and she is "healthy and competent to provide for her subsitance." He therefore asks the court and the jury to grant Julie freedom and to authorize the sheriff to make the publications "required by law" in case of emancipation [Docket in French].
