Abstract
Jean Baptiste, a free man of color, presents to the police jury that he is desirous to emancipate his fifty-five-year-old brother named Jean Louis, whom he purchased under the express condition of freeing him. He declares that Jean Louis has always behaved well, has never "occasioned any complaint," and that he is well able to support himself. Jean Baptiste therefore asks the police jury to allow him to emancipate Jean Louis, without compelling him to leave the state.
