Petition #20883803

Abstract

Jeanne Rousseau, who is an orphan, a minor over the age of nineteen, and a free woman of color, claims that she is of age and “possesses firmness & Judgment sufficient to administer her property & her affairs,” and therefore wishes to be emancipated, i.e., given power to make adult decisions. She further claims that she has been promised in marriage and “is desirous to fulfill that promise,” but that her tutor, Marcel Dupart, has constantly refused his consent without any “legal” reasons to do so. She therefore seeks an order from the court to convene a family meeting that will deliberate on her emancipation and force Dupart to show cause as to why her demand for emancipation and marriage should not be granted. External sources reveal that Marcel Dupart was a free man of color of mixed blood [a "mulatto"].

Result: Partially granted; discontinued.
