Petition #20883814

Abstract

Auguste Christin presents to the court that he is the "true & lawful owner, & proprietor" of a male slave named Alexis, about thirty or thirty-five years of age, whom he purchased in 1822 from Marie Elizabeth Amarante Livoy, widow Deverbois. Christin claims that Alexis was in his possession for twelve or thirteen years before he disappeared some four years ago. According to Christin, Alexis was either "inveigled away" or absconded from him. Be it as it may, Alexis has now been found in the possession of one Marie Rose Hudson, a free woman of color from New Orleans. Christin therefore prays that his title to Alexis be declared "good" and Hudson's claim to ownership "void & of no effect." He further prays that Hudson be ordered to return the slave to him or, failing to do so, to pay him $1,200, the value of his slave, plus another $1,000 for loss of services and expenses incurred over the last four years. He also wants Hudson to be directed to give bond or Alexis to be sequestered to prevent his being sold and removed from the jurisdiction of the court.
