Pierre Dufour and his daughter, Suzi Dufour, both free persons of color, are the petitioners. They present to the court that, in 1833, Pierre Dufour and his now deceased wife, Colette Berquier, purchased, "under the community of gains and acquits," a male slave named Louis Baudoin from Furcy Verret. Pierre Dufour explains that Louis Baudoin is his brother and that, since the purchase, Louis "has been treated as free" by the family, although they "have neglected to fulfill the formalities prescribed by law for his emancipation." Pierre and Suzi Dufour declare that Louis has rendered them "important services," that he is "of good morals and character," and that he has never been "guilty of any crime or misdemeanor." They therefore ask that the "publications provided for by law be posted up" and, if there is no opposition, that they be authorized to pass the "act of freedom."
