Victor Roumage presents to the court that, in 1834, he purchased from the testamentary executor of the late Zulma Roy a now thirty-three-year-old male slave named Jean, under the condition that he would manumit Jean as soon as he had been "refunded" the full purchase price, either by Jean himself or by someone on his behalf. Accordingly, Victor Roumage is now ready to emancipate Jean; and he asks the court to order that the "notices required by law" be posted up by the sheriff and, if no opposition is made, to authorize him to execute "a deed of manumission." A related petition reveals that Zulma Roy was a free woman of color.
