Pierre Dufour and Suzi Dufour are, respectively, the husband and daughter of the late Colette Berquier Dufour, and her only heirs. The Dufours are free people of color. They present to the police jury that, in 1836, Colette Berquier Dufour purchased, from Catherine Rocheblave, a forty-three-year-old female slave named Therèze. The act of sale stipulated that Therèze would be "set free" as soon as she had reimbursed Colette for the price of her purchase. The Dufours further present that Therèze has now fully reimbursed the estate and "acquired the right" to her freedom. They declare, moreover, that Therèze is "of good morals and character," is "capable of maintaining herself by her labor and industry," is "respectful with white," and possesses "the other qualifications which may be desired in a subject recommended" for manumission. The Dufours therefore ask the police jury to authorize them "to fulfill the formalities prescribed by law" and pass unto Therèze the act of freedom without compelling her to leave the state.
