Petition #20884006

Abstract

Weyman Ingledove presents to the court that he is a man of "irreproachable character and reputation," and that he is not only a "good neighbor and good friend" but "harmless and inoffensive." Notwithstanding all these qualities, a free man of color named Antoine Lacour has "falsely, maliciously, and slanderously" accused him of dishonesty and of stealing and gambling away his horse, and has stated that "these accusations might easily be proved to be true and correct." Ingledove charges that such accusations have damaged his reputation and exposed him to "penalties prescribed by law," which was Lacour's intent in the first place. He sets the value of the damage to his good name at $5,000. He therefore prays that Lacour be cited to appear before the court and that a judgment be rendered against him in the sum of $5,000.

Result: Dismissed.
