Petition #20884009

Abstract

François Barthelemy LeBeau claims that his two runaway slaves, a mulatto "boy" named Harrison and a mulatto "girl" named Aimée, were concealed on board the ship Tecumseh, in February of the current year, by Captain Luydam, who intended to spirit them away. Luydam and one man called Howland are the owners of the Tecumseh. At the time of their escape, according to LeBeau, Harrison and Aimée had with them several pieces of valuable gold and diamond jewelry valued at $3,375, which they had stolen from him. Luydam, who has since been arrested, is now in New Orleans. LeBeau therefore seeks the court to order Luydam and Howland, the latter still in New York, to pay him the sum of $5,000, which represents the value of the stolen jewelry, the amount of expenses incurred in trying to recover his slaves, and the depreciation on his slaves. He also prays that the ship Tecumseh be seized and sold to satisfy his claim.

Result: Discontinued.
