Petition #20884013

Abstract

Weyman Ingledove presents to the court that he is a man of "irreproachable honesty, character, and reputation," and that he is not only "harmless and inoffensive" but a "good neighbor and good friend" to boot. He claims that, notwithstanding all these stellar qualities, a free man of color named Antoine Lacour has "falsely, maliciously, and slanderously" accused him of dishonesty and of stealing and gambling away his horse, and has thus damaged his reputation. What is more, Antoine Lacour has "uttered and spoken" threats, in "both the English and french languages," to the effect that, if Ingledove ever came to his house, he would "shoot him & make his negroes throw his dead body in the river." Ingledove alleges that the damage to his reputation and good name amounts to $5,000. He therefore prays that Lacour be cited to appear before the court and that a judgment be rendered against him in the sum of $5,000.
