Petition #20884022

Abstract

Elizabeth Camille Dorinau Deblanc seeks a separation of bed and board, and of property, from her husband, Louis Amable Charbonnet. Elizabeth represents that she was married to Louis Charbonnet at the tender age of fourteen-and-a-half, with her mother’s consent. She brought to the marriage a dowry of $10,000 and another $5,000 in “paraphernal” property. She contends that, although she has been “faithful to her duties as a virtuous wife and mother,” her husband has been “unmindful” of his duties towards her. He has repeatedly abused her, verbally and physically, and has committed adultery with their servants, while charging that he is not the father of her last two children. His conduct has been such that she was forced to seek refuge and comfort with her mother and other relatives. After a brief reconciliation initiated by her husband, her life has again become so unbearable that she can no longer dwell with him. Elizabeth Dorinau DeBlanc Charbonnet therefore seeks a separation of bed and board from her husband and a judgment directing her husband to pay her $15,000, the value of her “dotal” and “paraphernal” property.
