Petition #20884114

Abstract

Silésie Pierre Auguste, a free woman of color, represents that, when she married a free man of color named John Chevis fourteen years ago, she owned property consisting of nine heads of “horse creatures,” thirty heads of “horned cattle,” five “breeding sows,” and articles of household furniture. All the property has been administered by her husband since the marriage. Silésie contends, however, that her husband’s affairs “have fallen” into such confusion that she is desirous of “retaking the administration of her property.” She therefore prays to be authorized to sue her husband and to have a judgment directing that her property be “set apart. She asks to be permitted to administer her “paraphernal” property “free from the constraint or interference” of her husband.

Result: Dismissed on motion of plaintiff's counsel.
