Petition #20884206

Abstract

Désireé Coton Mais, a free woman of color seeks to recover her paraphernal property from her husband, François Metoyer Jr., a free man of color, whom she married in 1825. In 1828, Désireé received from her father, Antoine Coton Mais, a free man of color, $200 for "her individual and separate use." Metoyer was given the money and has since spent it "for his own purposes." In July 1841, Désireé received from the administrator of her late father's estate $2,109.58, which Metoyer also confiscated for his own benefit. Désireé prays for "authorization to sue" her husband, for a judgment against him in the amount of $2,309.58 with interest, and for permission to "retain administration of her said paraphernalia by herself and without interference of her husband."
