Petition #20884213

Abstract

Marianne Manette Guillory petitions for separation of property from her current husband, Daniel McDaniel. Prior to this marriage, Guillory was the widow of the late Louis Lucas Fontenot. In March 1837, Marianne purchased property worth $13,665.62 from her late husband's estate, including four slaves, two of whom are listed as orphans. Daniel McDaniel, her new husband, has appropriated this property for his own use. Because McDaniel has "mismanaged the administration of her dotal & paraphernal property, & because his pecuniary affairs have fallen into confusion," Marianne prays for a "separation of property, between them, leaving her the sole control & administrator thereof without any interference on the part of her aforesaid Husband." Marianne also prays that McDaniel pay the mortgage value of the property bought and sold with her money and the value of the cotton crops of the years 1838 to 1841, which he sold without her consent.
