Petition #20884243

Abstract

Pleasant H. Harbour sues the Steamboat Chieftain's captain and owners for the loss of his slave named George. George was found on board of the Chieftain in December 1841. Harbour claims that George was concealed on the steamboat and carried out of the state into Illinois, where the petitioner recovered him "after great trouble & loss." In addition, Harbour claims that he is entitled to $500, according to a Louisiana Statute, since his slave was allowed on the boat without his consent and transported against the owner's will. Harbour prays that judgment be rendered in his favour for the sum of $1,100 against Deft. or Defts. in solids with privilege as aforesaid on the Steamboat Chieftan."
