Petition #20884401

Abstract

Sally Müller, known as Mary, seeks to recover her freedom. Müller represents that she is a white woman and a native of Germany who came to Louisiana as an infant with her parents. After her parents’ deaths, she was "illegally & feloniously seized by one John F. Miller,” who “converted” her as a slave and kept her for twenty years. During this time, she gave birth to three children, Madison, Adeline and Charles, fathered by Miller's overseer, a man named William Stube. Madison and Adeline are still Miller’s slaves. As for Müller, she was sold in 1838 to one Louis Belmonte. Müller claims that she has now discovered “sufficient proofs of her free rights & has found friends and relations with means & influence sufficient to maintain them.” Müller therefore prays that both Miller and Belmonte be cited to answer her suit. She prays that the court will establish her freedom and give her back her children. Furthermore, she seeks compensation for her labor and services in the sum of $10,000, plus any additional compensation deemed fit.
