Petition #20884507

Abstract

Marie Théreze Elizabeth Metoyer, widow of Narcisse Prudhomme, seeks to recover a debt from Jean Baptiste Dominique Metoyer, a free man of color. Marie Théreze claims that Jean Baptiste is indebted to her in the sum of $1,084.23, plus interest at the rate of 10% per annum. According to Marie Théreze, the debt arose from a promissory note executed to her husband’s order in 1842 and payable on the 1st of June 1844. The debt is secured by a mortgaged on a tract of land measuring three “arpents” front on the Red River. Marie Théreze charges that the debt has not been paid, although amicably demanded. She therefore seeks an order directing Jean Baptiste to pay the debt. She also prays that the mortgage on Jean Baptiste’s land be “recognized, allowed and enforced” by seizure and sale to satisfy her claim [Related petitions indicate that Marie Théreze Metoyer and Narcisse Prudhomme were free people of color].
