Abstract

Tyrone Middleton, a mulatto woman, sues to be decreed free, together with her children. Tyrone claims that she was born of a free white woman named Martha Middleton, but that she was “taken when a child from her mother" and "reduced to slavery by Isaac Chadwick.” The latter has held her and her children in slavery ever since. Tyrone prays to be sequestered for “safe keeping” during the proceedings. She asks the court to decree her and her children free, and to order Chadwick to pay $10 per month for the last six years she worked for him.
