Petition #20884714

Abstract

Dr. Jules Noé Rivet, of St. Charles Parish, and Dr. Gustave Chabaud, of St. John the Baptist Parish, present to the court that they were hired in 1846 by the Parish of St. John the Baptist in order to perform services as physicians and "chemists" in the murder trial of a slave named Valentin. Valentin, the property of Ramon Frères, and some other slaves were charged with the murder of a slave belonging to Charles Perret of St. Charles Parish. The petitioners claim that, at the request of the Justice of the Peace, they traveled to Jefferson Parish, where they disinterred the victim's body and examined it for cause of death. They state that the body was in "an advanced state of dissolution and putrefaction" and required a long, minute, and "extremely unpleasant" chemical analysis. They allege that the police jury of the parish of St. John the Baptist has so far refused to pay for their services, although bound by law and amicably asked to do so. They therefore ask that the police jury be cited to appear in court and that the parish, after due process of law, be condemned to pay the debt [Original in English and French].
