Petition #20884838

Abstract

Antoine Decuir, a free man of color, presents to the court that, in 1847, a judgment was rendered in his favor against one Victor Duperron, also a free man of color, in the sum of $660 with interest at 10% per annum. The judgment, duly recorded in the parish's public records, gave Decuir a "judicial mortgage" on Duperron's land and seventeen slaves. Decuir further presents that, early in the year 1848, Victor Duperron transferred ownership of his land and slaves to his son Louis Duperron. The latter promised to pay his father's debt. Decuir now alleges that, although he has so far received $260 from Duperron and his son, the majority of the debt remains unpaid. He therefore prays that a writ of seizure and sale be issued on the land and slaves to satisfy his claim.
