Petition #20884848

Abstract

Domingo Herrera petitions to have a young free girl of color named Justine placed under his care. Herrera represents that Joseph Matchas, a free man of color, died on the 2nd of October 1848, leaving a twelve-year-old daughter named Justine. Justine was born out of wedlock to the late Matchas and a woman who died many years ago. During his lifetime, Matchas frequently begged Herrera to take charge of Justine in the event of his death. Herrera, who is the owner of Justine’s sister and who was cared for by the medically skillful Matchas during a time of sickness, has accepted the charge. He therefore prays for an order calling for a family meeting to deliberate on his suitability as Justine’s guardian.
