Zénon, a free man of color, represents that Joseph Narcisse, also a free man of color, owes him $244.20 against a past due promissory note. Zénon claims that, although he has presented the note to Joseph Narcisse for payment, the latter has refused and continues to refuse to pay the debt “without any cause.” Zénon therefore seeks a judgment in his favor for payment of the debt, plus “legal” interest.
