Petition #20885134

Abstract

Aimée Porche [Tounoir], a free woman of color, presents to the court that, earlier in the year, a slave named Madison, belonging to Ebenezer Cooley, stabbed her slave named Hypolite, who at the time was hired out to one Henry Demouy for $11 per month. Aimée Porche claims that, as a result of the stabbing, she has incurred various expenses: $22 of lost hires while Hypolite was unable to work, $109 for medical care, and $12.88 for "leeches, quinine, and other drugs." She further represents that "Hypolite is a young creole negro, of excellent character, and was of great strength & worth; but is now in consequence of said wound diminished in value to the amount of Three hundred dollars, at least." The slave Madison, on the other hand, "is a negro of a violent & dangerous disposition," who has since been tried and sentenced to one year of hard labor in the state penitentiary. Porche seeks compensation from Ebenezer Cooley in the amount of $443.88 plus interest "for judicial demand" [Original partially in French].

Result: Dismissed.
