Petition #20885231

Abstract

Antoine Dubuclet, a free man of color, offers to the court an inventory of the property belonging to him and his nine minor children. The children are the "issue of his marriage" to the late Claire Pollard, also a free woman of color, and their late mother's heirs. The property consists of land, slaves and "moveables," and its total value is assessed at $82,076.25, of which about $27,000 is in slaves. The total number and list of slaves are not provided. Antoine Dubuclet is "desirous" to have the community property adjudicated to him at the assessed price and three of the slaves in his wife's estate proper sold for cash. Antoine Dubuclet therefore asks the court to call a family meeting to deliberate on whether this should be done, in the interest of the children [The French term "biens propres" is used in this and related petitions to designate property owned by an individual separate from a couple's community property]. A related petition reveals that the Dubuclet family was of mixed raced.
