François Jean, a free man of color, seeks to recover a debt from William Edmonds, also a free man of color. Jean represents that, in December 1851, Edmonds executed a $300 promissory note to his order, payable one year later and with interest accruing at the rate of 8% per annum from maturity. François Jean claims that, although the note has reached maturity, it remains unpaid. He therefore seeks an order of seizure and sale of Edmonds’s land to satisfy his claim. Related petitions reveal that Rachel Gradenigo, one of Edmonds' neighbors, was a free woman of color.
