Petition #20885421

Abstract

William C. Palmer and his wife, Julietta A. Palmer, of Jefferson parish, seek $1,000 in damages from David Bidwell. William and Julietta Palmer represent that Julietta’s slave, a twenty-five-year-old “Griffe” named Jane, “absented herself” from her owner’s custody on the 10th of March 1854. She was apprehended several weeks later and returned home. Two days later, however, she ran away again and was not found until September. William and Julietta Palmer claim that Jane was “decoyed” into running away and concealed by a slave named John Brown, belonging to one David Bidwell. The Palmers contend that John Brown, whom they describe as being of “Griffe complexion,” is allowed by Bidwell to “go at large and have the control of his own time,” which gave him the opportunity to rent a room where he kept Jane concealed. William and Julietta Palmer therefore seek an order condemning Bidwell to pay $400 for the value of Jane’s services, $500 for depreciation in her selling value, and $100 for expenses incurred and time spent in trying to find her. In addition, they pray for a privilege on John Brown, Bidwell´s slave, in order to secure their claim.
