Petition #20885436

Abstract

Theophile Louis Metoyer, a free man of color, presents to the court that, in 1823, his grandfather, Louis Metoyer, purchased from François Mulon, also a free man of color, a tract of land of six "arpents" front by the usual depth located in Cane River on the right bank of the Red River. Theophile Louis Metoyer claims to be his father's and grandfather's only surviving heir and, as such, the true of owner of the property purchased from François Mulon. He alleges, however, that Louis Mulon, François's son and heir, is in possession of the land and refuses to give it up. He also alleges that Louis Mulon is in possession of two of his slaves, a woman named Marguerite Créolle and her unnamed child, and refuses to give them up. Marguerite had been placed in the possession of Louis's mother, Catiche Metoyer Mulon, on the condition that she would be returned to the Metoyers upon Catiche's death. Theophile Louis Metoyer asks the court to decree him the "proper owner" of the land and slaves, and to order Mulon to pay him $5000 as compensation for the "rent and use" of his land for ten years, at the rate of $500 per year [Original in English; some text in French].
