Petition #20978903

Abstract

Philip Hall states that in 1782 he purchased Jack, who was offered at public sale by Samuel Norwood. Norwood presented Jack "as a sound healthy Slave and fit for labour and Service." When Hall returned home and put Jack to work, he discovered that Jack was "badly ruptured, fairly unsound and unfit to do labour." Hall sent the slave back, but Norwood refused to receive him and he refused to discuss the matter with Hall. Norwood filed a suit in 1789 in Baltimore County to receive £60 from the sale of Jack and received a verdict in his favor. Philip Hall asks that Samuel Norwood be subpoenaed and that an injunction be issued to prevent Norwood from collecting on the earlier verdict.
