Petition #20979104

Abstract

John Morton Jordan, husband of Dorothy Jordan and father of John Nesbitt Jordan, died leaving a considerable estate. Reuben Merriweather was appointed administrator. Shortly after Jordan's death, the petitioners "returned to England where they have Since continued to reside." They charge that in their absence, Merriweather has defrauded the estate. They claim that he left six slaves off the list of J. M. Jordan's assets. They further charge that shortly before Jordan died, and as he was about to travel to the West Indies for his health, he counted out, in front of a witness, £1600 and instructed Merriweather to convey the money to England. The petitioners claim that the money never reached that destination. They also note that several outstanding debts owed to Jordan's estate, totaling about £10,000, may or may not have been collected by the executor. The petitioners ask that Merriweather be subpoenaed and that he be ordered to pay them their just legacies.
