Robert Ferguson loaned Samuel Cleland £262.15.9 in 1786. To secure the debt, Cleland mortgaged the slaves Sam, John, Wilfred, Gay, Henny, Molly, and Anny, along with four horses. The debt was due on 1 November 1793. Ferguson reveals that the debt remains unpaid and that Cleland has "taken the benefit of an Act of insolvency" and John Gwinn is now the trustee of Cleland's affairs. The petitioner believes that his debt "is in a precarious situation and ... becomes every day more hazardous." He asks the court to summon Cleland and Gwinn to court and to order a sale of the slaves, if necessary, to satisfy the debt.
