Petition #20980301

Abstract

Job Garrettson seeks to enjoin proceedings on two judgments pending against him, and he asks that William Hollis be summoned to answer his charges. Garrettson, engaged in shipping on the Patapsco River, states that in November 1799 he agreed to buy a slave named Ben from Hollis, as he was seeking a slave who "was well acquainted with and accustomed to the management of such Boats," as well as being "well acquainted with plantation work and farming." Unable to pay cash, Garrettson gave Hollis two $160-notes, payable in 60 and 90 days. But after getting Ben home, Garrettson found him to be "of little or no value" because of a "great propensity to and habit of running away and of his great & notorious unfaithfulness to his master." Hollis agreed to forgive one of the notes, but Garrettson refused to pay anything on the debt. Now Garrettson states that Hollis has "instituted suits ... and intends to enforce your orator to pay the sum." The petitioner therefore prays that Hollis "be compelled to appear in this Court before your Honor and true full and Perfect answers make to the premises and to the several allegations and Charges therein against him."
