Petition #20980814

Abstract

Elizabeth Courtney complains that the sheriff has failed to perform his duties in enforcing a writ of ne exeat, thus allowing James Bryden and Violet Behn (defendants in a case filed earlier) to leave the state with a slave who was sold on the condition that she would not be removed from the state "during her servitude." Courtney asks the court to "compel the said Sheriff to produce the body of the said Bryden or that he may be assessed in a sum sufficient to indemnify your petitioner and that a Writ of Attachment may issue against him for a breach of said Injunction."

Result: Partially granted.
