Thomas Lewis mortgaged a slave named James Hanson, a valuable brickmaker who commanded $20 a month when hired out, on 9 March 1808 to William Whittington and on 10 June 1808 to Barney and Michael Curran. Barney and Mary Curran (Michael Curran's administratrix) allege that Whittington fraudulently sold James Hanson to Nicholas Z. Maccubbin. Whittington died intestate, and the Currans say that his administrators refuse to pay their claim against his estate. The Currans ask the court to subpoena Maccubbin and administrators John and Sarah Whittington and to settle the dispute.
