Petition #20981213

Abstract

Nicholas Leeke, guardian of Alice Cockey, states that under the "direction of his Counsel" he took a slave named Perry that belonged to the estate of his ward "from out of the street near your petitioner's house without noise or tumult." Later, Perry was "quietly sitting in a Back room," when Catharine Pearce, the wife of John Pearce, former guardian of Alice Cockey, "broke open the Street door of your petitioner's house and ... seized the said Negro Perry and took him away." Leeke "strove to keep the said negro for his ward, and received a violent blow from the said Catharine Pearce." Leeke failed miserably in his row with Pearce, and Perry is currently in the custody of John Pearce. Leeke asks the court to issue an attachment against John Pearce and compel him to return the slave.
