Petition #20981611

Abstract

John S. and Ann Smith Camden ask the court to uphold a previous judgment "against the Said Samuel Lukens for the value of" the services of a term slave named James up to 8 February 1815. They contend that James belonged to Sarah Warfield and that she willed the remainder of his service to Robert J. Smith and, following Robert's death, to Ann Smith, provided Robert and/or Ann pay Warfield's debts. They charge that Lukens, Warfield's executor, has not returned the slave or the monetary compensation for his hire as directed by the court. A related court opinion cites that Lukens in fact had manumitted the slave James.
