Petition #20981817

Abstract

William McMechan, executor of the estate of the late James Price, states that the deceased "mortgaged several slaves to your petitioner" in 1812. McMechan had the slaves appraised after the death of Price. Now, R. H. Price, the son of James Price, desires to purchase the remaining four slaves, at a private sale, "to prevent speculators in human flesh from becoming owners." McMechan states that "the negroes cannot at any sale public or private Sell for a sum equal to that due your petitioner and therefore assents that Risdon H Price be gratified in his wish for a private sale." McMechan "advanced and became bound for said James Price in a sum upwards of five thousand dollars."
