William H. Smith, a creditor of the late Eli Simkins, petitions that the deceased may have owned "certain personal property of which no mention is made in the Executors accounts." He asks the court to summon Joshua Levis, administrator of Eli Simkins's estate, and Maria N. Simkins, the deceased's widow, to answer questions regarding the estate. Smith specifically inquires, "Were there not certain negroes which were in the family of the said Eli Simkins as domestics Were they not Slaves?"
