James Hughes and others ask the court to prohibit John Bell from selling two slaves from the estate of James Parks. Bell has recently married Catherine Parks, James Parks's widow. The petitioners charge that Bell is mismanaging Parks's estate and depriving the "orphan children ... of the common necessaries of life." They assert that Bell has no right to sell the two slaves, one being valuable and currently under hire, and they do not want to see the slaves "inhumanly torn from their home friends & connexions."
