George Medkiff asks that possession of two slaves, Araminta and her daughter, Debby, "be vested in him." The court has directed Medkiff, through a writ of habeas corpus, to produce the slaves in court. Araminta filed a petition for her freedom based on a deed of manumission but Medkiff explains that the deed was not recorded and therefore not deemed to be legal. He states that five years earlier, his wife Dorothy Darnall "conveyed her right" in said slaves to John Davis who later manumitted them. However, he notes, his wife was a minor at the time and therefore "not capable" of executing a valid deed. Medkiff states that he has possession of the two slaves and petitions the court to validate his ownership.
