Petition #20982314

Abstract

James Iglehart Jr. purchased a slave named Airy owned by John H. Brown at a public sale. After the sale was ratified, Iglehart immediately "assigned his purchase" to Dennis Claude. Iglehart and Claude have since discovered that, contrary to what was represented to the bidders at auction, Airy is not a slave for life. According to the will of a previous owner, William Hammond, she and her issue were to be manumitted twenty-five years after Hammond's death in 1807, leaving only a few years left on her term of servitude. The petitioners ask that the sale be annulled and vacated.
