Petition #20982501

Abstract

On 23 August 1819, William McMechen mortgaged sixteen or more slaves to Samuel Moale to secure various debts that he owed to Moale. Heavily indebted to various people, McMechen "applied for the benefit of the insolvent laws of Maryland" on 21 September 1824, and the court appointed Upton S. Heath as trustee of McMechen's property to pay the creditors. Moale says that McMechen has made various payments, but still owes a sum of $1618.41 (plus interest) that is now past due. Moale asks the court to order the sale of the mortgaged slaves if the debt is not paid soon.
