Petition #20982508

Abstract

William Hutchins is a relative of Nicholas Hutchins, the thirteen-year-old owner of a nineteen-year-old slave named Samuel. William Hutchins claims that on 25 March 1825, he paid James Graham $30 to hire Samuel for a year. Although the year is not over, Graham has taken back Samuel in order to sell him, claiming that Samuel is "insolent, disobedient, and unproductive of any benefit or income to his said ward." Hutchins asserts, however, that Samuel has been living with him and "has conducted himself well." Hutchins asks the court to revoke the order that authorized Graham to sell Samuel. [An attached bill of sale reveals that Graham sold Samuel to Austin Woolfolk, one of Baltimore's major slave dealers.]
