Petition #20982511

Abstract

Rebecca Price Freeman is guardian of her daughter, Sophia P. Freeman. Sophia's late grandfather, William Price, gave her a young slave named Rose before he died. According to the petitioner, twelve-year-old Rose "has habits so vicious and incorrigible" that Freeman cannot keep her or hire her out. Rose "is in the habit of running away frequently; and She is prone to falsehood & theft." Just recently, Freeman sent Rose to Walter Worthington in the hopes that he could find a place for her, but he now says that "he knows not what to do with her" and that Rose is "so intolerably bad" that he advises selling her. Freeman asks the court to authorize her to sell Rose and to use the proceeds for her daughter "as your Honors may advise or direct."
